An Indian Army Colonel commanding a Rashtriya Rifles Unit along with a Major and a deputy superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police have been martyred in an encounter in Anantnag with terrorists in Kashmir, officials said.
“An Indian Army Colonel commanding a Rashtriya Rifles Unit along with a Major have lost their lives in an encounter in Anantnag with terrorists in Kashmir. The officer was commanding 19 RR,” Indian Army officials said.
Amid ongoing gunfights between the security forces and terrorists in the Rajouri and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi on Wednesday said Pakistan was trying to send radicalised gunmen from across the border to disturb peace in the Valley.
Speaking to media persons at the conclusion of the two day North Tech Symposium 2023 in Jammu, the Northern Army commander said, “Pakistan is upto its old tricks of sending terrorists across the border to disturb peace in Jammu and Kashmir. At a time when the Valley has set sights on welcoming 2.25 crore tourists this year, Pakistan is trying to unleash terror in the region yet again. However, we will not led Pakistan succeed in its nefarious designs.”
He was reponding to questions on the gunning down of two terrorists in the ongoing encounter that broke out in the Narla area of Rajouri district on Tuesday, Greater Kashmir reported.
Earlier today, officers from the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police were injured after an encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Kokernag area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said.
Taking to their official handle on social media platform ‘X’, the Jammu and Kashmir Police posted, “An encounter has started in Kokernag area of Anantnag. Officers from the Army and JKP (Jammu and Kashmir Police) were injured. Details shall follow.”
Kent, a dog from the Army’s canine unit, also died shielding its handler from enemy fire.
Meanwhile, two terrorists were killed by security forces during an encounter that began in the Narla area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri on Tuesday.
Security forces have recovered a large quantity of warlike stores, including medicines, with Pakistan markings during a search amid the encounter that continued on Wednesday evening according to officials.
The Defence PRO, Lt Col Suneel Bartwal said that Indian army and Jammu and Kashmir police tracked the movement of two terrorists since September 7.
“Troops cordoned the terrorists and heavy firefight ensued on September 12 wherein one terrorist was killed on the same night. Despite bad weather and hostile terrain, the second terrorist was pursued and neutralized on the morning of September 13 after heavy firing throughout the night,” the PRO statement added.
